2.4 Kampereen K2 Tent Trailer Field Test
Sometime around mid October 2020 I finished the K2 and it was time for the first tent trailer field test for this design. There was a lot I liked about this camper.
To begin with, setup was super fast and easy. After removing the soft top, all I had to do was flip up the sides. A pair of gas lid props helped push the sides into place as the roof unfolded. Voila! This design had a pocket for the bed, so the 6″ memory foam mattress was already in place. There was room to the side for blankets and pillow. Nothing to set up. It was already there.
The cargo hold had about 35 cubic feet of storage space which is stupid large. Anything I could possibly want to take would easily fit in the 82 x 48 x 16 space. In what I thought was kind of a cool feature, you could get to the cargo any time whether the bed was set up or not. Seeing the fully opened sleeping area tilted at a 45 degree angle made for a funny picture.
The Indian Chief Vintage I was riding at the time had zero trouble putting the camper, even when I happened to have it loaded up. That one pic of the camper behind the bike makes it look massive, but that’s kind of misleading. Yes, it was big, but not as big as it looks in that picture.
This camper towed well, cargo was easy to get to and setup was a breeze. These were important elements of my wish list.
The other big positive that came out of this was that this prototype taught me more about camper design and its influence on the building process than any design before or after. There were many aspects of this camper that looked good but when it came to making them, that was a lot more complicated. Many more lessons were learned which I will enumerate in the next post.
